What is ‘Galaxy Gas’ and is the new TikTok trend dangerous?

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The company called “Galaxy Gas” has gained attention on social media for selling flavored laughing gas and whipped cream canisters.

People on TikTok have been sharing videos of themselves ‘snorting’ Galaxy Gas to get high as part of a new trend. The cans are available online or at major brand stores.

However, doctors warn that side effects can occur if people use products like Galaxy Gas incorrectly.

A cream charger is a stainless steel cartridge filled with nitrous oxide (N2O) gas.

“Nitrous oxide is a gas that helps whip cream and other ingredients into a frothy, whipped state when dispensed. Compared to traditional hand whipping, cream whippers can increase the volume of whipped cream by 4x. … An average cream whipper contains 8 grams of N2O under pressure and is not refillable,” the company’s website states.

When you visit the company’s website, you must agree to a disclosure statement before you can scroll further.

“By purchasing products containing nitrous oxide, you expressly agree and warrant that your possession and use thereof are in accordance with the law and are strictly limited to the culinary preparation of food as legally intended and for no other purpose,” reads part of the statement on the site.

Dr. Puja Vithalani, a family physician at Kaiser Permanente, told Yahoo News that improper use of Galaxy Gas has many side effects.

“There’s a reason it’s an anesthetic. We use it in dental procedures, medical procedures. They even use it in childbirth. It’s something that requires monitoring. It’s something that requires oxygen afterwards … it’s very dangerous to use it out there,” he said.

TikTok is now warning that some substances may be dangerous if you search for “Galaxy Gas” in the app.

“Some substances can be dangerous when used or abused. Learn more about how drugs, alcohol and tobacco can affect your mind, body and behavior,” the social media site’s warning reads.
