Drake Maye made his debut for the New England Patriots in the closing minutes of a 24-3 loss to the New York Jets on Thursday.

The No. 3 overall pick saw limited action but made the most of the minutes he played, completing four of his eight passes for 22 yards and picking up 12 yards on two rushes, one of which was a rush for 11 yards.

Maye made his debut when starter Jacoby Brissett struggled, throwing for just 98 yards in the loss.

After the game, head coach Jerod Mayo was unsure about Brissett’s status as QB1 and indicated that the staff will at least consider a quarterback change:

Would Jerod Mayo consider a Patriots QB change? “I don’t know. We talk about it every week, you’re competing for a job. We get together as a coaching staff.”

While Patriots fans haven’t seen much of Maye thus far, they are ready for New England to promote him to QB1.

It’s not an ideal start to the year for Brissett, who has just 270 passing yards and one touchdown on a 58.8 completion percentage through three games.

While fans are ready to see Maye start for the Patriots, New England’s Week 4 game against the San Francisco 49ers might be an inopportune time to give him his first start.

The Patriots’ offensive line has struggled this year, with 11 sacks in three games, including seven on Thursday. Maye has only made one appearance in the game and has been sacked twice. If Maye starts next week against the 49ers, he’ll likely give up a handful of sacks against a strong defensive line, which isn’t an ideal situation for a rookie quarterback.

On the other hand, it would be best for Mayo’s development if he moved Maye to center as soon as possible. That could be a factor in his decision.
