Caitlin Clark scores tonight: Indiana Fever-Washington Mystics stats

Caitlin Clark scored eight points and had eight assists, but the Indiana Fever lost their final game of the regular season 92-91 at Washington.

The game was of little consequence, as Indiana had already secured the sixth seed in the playoffs. The Fever will face third-seeded Connecticut in the first round. The series will be a best of three, with the first two games played in Connecticut. If a Game 3 is needed, Indiana will host it.

Clark played less than 20 minutes Thursday in Washington, a move Fever coach Christie Sides warned during Thursday’s pregame when she said the team would be extra cautious with all of its starters. Clark shot 2 of 5 from the field, with both of her shots coming from 3s. She also had five rebounds and one steal.

Clark finished the regular season averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals, bests in the league. (Clark also led the league in turnovers, with 5.6 per game, but it’s common for guards who handle the ball to top that stat category as well.) She broke numerous records in her first year as a pro and is the odds-on favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award next week, when all the league awards are announced.

The Fever got a scare when guard Kelsey Mitchell, who’s been on a roll since the Olympics, badly sprained her left ankle early in the game. Mitchell was slow to get back on defense and went straight back to the locker room after being substituted. Mitchell didn’t start the second half, but she did warm up after halftime, meaning it was likely a precaution to leave her out — she played less than five minutes.

Kristy Wallace led the Fever Thursday with 17 points, while NaLyssa Smith contributed 16. Sika Kone had 20 for Washington.
