Marc-André ter Stegen says he ‘feels sorry for Eric Garcia’ after Champions League red card for Barcelona

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen spoke out after Eric Garcia was sent off after the 2-1 defeat to AS Monaco on Thursday evening.

A poor pass from Ter Stegen left Eric in trouble and the 23-year-old committed a foul that earned him a red card after just 11 minutes.

The fact that there was already one man less so early in the match proved to be decisive for the match. According to Ter Stegen, there was a misunderstanding between the two players.

“We didn’t understand each other well in that situation, I feel sorry for Eric, it hurts him. And we played 80 minutes with one player less,” he told Movistar.

“We didn’t understand each other. Something happened that shouldn’t have happened to anyone. These are things that happen in football. The defeat hurts, because with 10 on the pitch we stood up and tried to get a point.”

Lamine Yamal equalised to give Barcelona hope, before Monaco took the lead in the second half with a shot from Ter Stegen.

The goalkeeper did not want to say much about the second goal, but he did look ahead.

“We stood up for ourselves. And the second goal came at an undeserved moment. In the end you are left with the bad feeling that you have not taken any points,” he added.

“In the Champions League you always have to win. That’s the goal. We’ll try to win the next game at home.”

The defeat to Monaco is Barcelona’s first defeat of the season on a tough night for Hansi Flick’s side, who return to La Liga action on Sunday at Villarreal.
