It’s warm today and Friday

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Meteorologist Jake Dunne says for the first time this week, it’s a calm and (mostly) storm-free start to the day. Later today, however, the weather concern will be the heat, as high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s will feel like 100 degrees when you factor in the humidity.

After 5 p.m., areas along and east of the Kansas Turnpike will see a storm or two. Most areas will remain dry, however, and while small hail and damaging winds cannot be ruled out, widespread severe weather is unlikely.

Friday will be another unusually warm afternoon with highs in the mid 90s, or ten to fifteen degrees above average, and a heat index around 100. Showers and storms are possible after 5 p.m., but not likely, and some could be quite strong.

A much stronger storm system will bring widespread showers and storms to the state this weekend. The best chances will be in northern and western Kansas on Saturday, followed by greater chances in southern and eastern Kansas on Sunday. While heavy, drenching rain is possible, if not likely, no severe weather is expected this weekend.

After temperatures of around 32 degrees on Saturday and 27 degrees on Sunday, it looks set to be a lot cooler at the beginning of next week, with highs around 21 degrees and night temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees.
