Caleb Williams ‘a little bruised’ after Sunday night’s loss

The Bears scored their first offensive touchdown of the season Sunday night in Houston, but it was still a long night for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

Williams was sacked seven times and struck out 11 times in the 19-13 loss to the Texans. He was pressured many more times as the Texans blitzed relentlessly, contributing to interceptions on back-to-back second-half drives and the Bears having four three-and-outs over the course of the night.

After the game, Williams was subdued when asked about the blows he took from the Texans defense.

“A a little bruised,” Williams said, via Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports. “You know, I took a few hits today. I’m going to get in the ice tub and do whatever I have to do to make sure my body is ready for tomorrow, the other days of training and of course the next game.”

Head coach Matt Eberflus said the protection issues are with “everyone” and cited improvements in the running game as another way to make life easier for the rookie quarterback. The changes will have to come quickly, as other teams will follow the same blueprint as Houston until the Bears show they can handle it better than they did Sunday.
