MAGA Turns Against Laura Loomer

Several prominent members of Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement are urging the former president to cut ties with controversial activist Laura Loomer, with one Trump ally in Congress even accusing her of making “horrific and extremely racist” comments.

The outrage came after Loomer was photographed with Trump on Wednesday at two 9/11 memorial events after she posted a racist tirade directed at Vice President Kamala Harris on X, formerly Twitter.

Loomer’s relationship with Trump has long infuriated some of his closest allies and there was open disagreement in April 2023 when The New York Times reported that the former president was considering hiring the Florida Republican.

Trump ultimately did not give Loomer a job, but she was seen in his entourage on Wednesday during visits to New York and Pennsylvania to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The move was particularly controversial because Loomer, a self-described “proud Islamophobe” who was banned from Twitter but reinstated after it was purchased by Elon Musk, suggested last year that 9/11 was an “inside job.”

On September 8, Loomer posted an X about Harris after the Democratic presidential candidate posted about her Indian heritage. Loomer said, “If Kamala Harris wins, the White House will smell like curry and White House speeches will go through a call center and the American people will only be able to give their feedback via a customer satisfaction survey at the end of the call that no one will understand.”

Three days later, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of Trump’s staunchest supporters in Congress, responded with her own X-post, saying: “This is abhorrent and extremely racist. It does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA. This does not represent President Trump.

“This type of behavior should never be tolerated. Laura Loomer should be removed.”

Greene later said she “used to be friends” with Loomer, but that the activist “turned on me and started attacking me” after she “didn’t support her” in a Florida House race and then “lied so much about me and others like Matt Gaetz, even though we are President Trump’s most loyal and fervently elected members of Congress.”

Willie J. Montague, a Trump supporter running for Florida’s 10th Congressional District, agreed with Greene, writing, “It’s disgusting. She must be stopped.”

Akshat Bhatia, a Republican running for mayor in Irvine, California, responded to Loomer’s initial post by saying, “I am a conservative Trump supporter at heart and I agree with most of your posts, but I feel this is an unnecessarily racist post about thousands of conservative Indian Trump supporters. This is how you turn conservative Indian Trump supporters into liberal Democrats.”

Loomer was also criticized by Sen. Lindsey Graham, a prominent Trump ally in Congress.

In an interview with HuffPost on Thursday, he said: “We disagree on policy, but this person’s history is just very toxic.

“I mean, she basically called for Kellyanne Conway’s daughter to hang herself. I don’t know how this all happened, but no, I don’t think it helps. I don’t think it helps at all.”

Newsweek reached out to Laura Loomer and the Donald Trump presidential campaign for comment on Friday, via X direct message and email, respectively, outside of regular business hours.

In a message from X on Wednesday evening, Loomer wrote: “To the many reporters who call me and continually ask me to speak with them today, the answer is no.

“I’m very busy with my stories and research and don’t have time to respond to your conspiracy theories. I don’t work for President Trump. I don’t work for anyone.”

Trump has praised Loomer before, calling her “the great Laura Loomer” during a speech in Nashville, Tennessee, in July and calling her a “woman of courage” at his Mar-a-Lago resort in March.

Some Trump supporters have defended Loomer on social media. In response to Greene’s criticism, one “hockey mom” with “Trump2024” in her bio said: “Come on Marge. Laura has worked her ass off for the last three years to expose everyone while our elected officials do nothing but tweet, send letters and hold pointless hearings.”
