Chappell Roan held her own on the VMAs red carpet.

On Wednesday, September 11, the “Good Luck, Babe” singer and 2024 MTV VMAs nominee approached someone at the pre-show step-and-repeat in Long Island, New York.

A clip from the red carpet leading up to the VMAs show at UBS Arena, which was later shared en masse by fans on X (formerly Twitter), shows the 26-year-old pop star reacting after someone on the carpet utters, “shut the f— up.” Variety also shared a different angle of the interaction, revealing that the person she was responding to was a photographer.

“Shut up,” Roan said, pointing in the direction of the apparent harasser.

After stepping back to have her outfit adjusted, Roan added, “Don’t do that. Not me, bitch!”

Roan’s response prompted cheers and chatter on the carpet, including one attendee who responded, “Tell them, girl.”

Further down the carpet, the “Casual” musician spoke to Entertainment tonight about the moment. “This is pretty overwhelming and pretty scary. I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety from people yelling at you, the carpet is horrible,” she told the outlet. “And I yelled back. I yelled back! You can’t yell at me like that.”

A spokesperson for Roan did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Roan’s red carpet reaction came when she debuted her medieval VMAs outfit ahead of the show. The look featured a sheer Y/Project dress, a mint green cape, and thigh-high boots, and she accessorized with a sword, metallic cuffs, and lots of jewelry.

Roan is nominated for Best New Artist at the VMAs, an award for which she was nominated alongside Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims and Tyla. Roan will also perform at the show, as will Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello and Katy Perry, who is the latest recipient of the Video Vanguard Award.

It’s been a hectic year for Roan, who has had several songs in the charts Billboard Hot 100 and drew huge festival crowds across the country. But as she told Bowen Yang during their recent Interview magazine conversation, even with her radio and streaming success, she’s “never given a f— about the charts or being on the radio.”

“The biggest thing is getting recognized and not feeling like myself. And touring, it’s all-consuming,” Roan (real name Kayleigh Amstutz) added in the interview. “I never gave a f— about the charts or being on the radio, but it’s crazy how people in the industry are taking me more seriously than they used to. I’m like, ‘I’ve been doing this the whole time, bitch.'”

Roan added that her career “doesn’t mean anything now that I have an album and a song that’s on the charts.”

“If anything, I’m like, ‘F— you guys for not seeing what really matters.’ A graph is so fleeting,” she said. “Everyone leaves the graphs alone. I’m just like, ‘This is the valedictory.'”
