Juvenile suspect arrested after making terrorist threats to schools on Instagram, SAPD says

SAN ANTONIO – A minor is facing several charges after making terroristic threats against seven schools in the San Antonio area, police said.

The 12-year-old suspect was arrested around 8 p.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of South Hamilton Avenue, San Antonio police said.

The suspect allegedly posted a photo on Instagram of a high-caliber firearm with various school names and upcoming dates in September. The threats circulated on social media.

Because the post mentioned multiple schools affiliated with the San Antonio Independent School District, the district said police were investigating the threats with assistance from nearby law enforcement officials.

SAISD called the threats not credible in a statement.

“We are aware of online activity circulating between schools in local school districts, including SAISD, that has raised concerns. Our SAISD Police Department has investigated this activity in conjunction with local law enforcement, including SAPD, and at this time it has been determined that it does not pose a credible threat,” the statement said.

Once SAPD became aware of the threats, the department’s Southwest Texas Fusion Center went to work identifying the person behind them.

With the help of several law enforcement agencies, the suspect was arrested and charged with seven counts of terroristic threats – public fear of serious bodily harm, police said.

According to SAISD, there were no weapons in the suspect’s home, so the threats were not considered credible.

As a precaution, SAISD is increasing police presence around campuses this week.
