Ex-Patriots CB banned from match over brawl

Jack Jones is still struggling to stay on the field in his new home.

The Raiders cornerback was thrown out of the season opener in Las Vegas after a fight with Chargers wideout Joshua Palmer on Sunday afternoon. You can watch video of the altercation here . Jones, a 2022 fourth-round pick by the Patriots, didn’t last two seasons in Foxborough before New England parted ways with him.

Jones was suspended at the end of his rookie season due to injury rehab issues, arrested at Logan Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle weapons through TSA the following spring, and then fell out of favor with the coaching staff again in his second season after reportedly missing curfew. The Patriots elected to let him go following the team’s trip to Germany last November, but Bill Belichick remained tight-lipped about the circumstances at the time.

Q: What prompted the decision to fire Jones?

Belichick: “I felt like it was time to move on.”

Q: Was the decision to part ways because of Jones’ performances or because of his behaviour and attitude off the field?

Belichick: “I felt it was time to move on.”

Q: Did anything happen in Germany that caused Jones to be fired?

Belichick: “No, not really.”

Q: Why now? Why fire Jones this week when he was clearly in a precarious position the last few weeks?

Belichick: “Yeah, I just felt like this was the right time.”

Q: How do the Patriots feel about the decision to draft Jones? Did they miss anything in the draft process?

Belichick: “Jack is a talented player. He showed that when he played for us at times. Ultimately, I thought we just had to move on. But he’s a talented player.”
