Heavy rain hits parts of the UK this weekend as flood risk remains | UK Weather

This weekend, large parts of the UK will be hit by heavy rainfall, with the risk of flooding.

A new band of “heavy and thundery showers” will reach the south coast on Saturday and move northwards overnight, affecting central and southern England and Wales, the Met Office said.

Although no weather warnings had been issued on Saturday morning, more could follow after several warnings earlier this week, the meteorologist said.

Heavy rain hit southern England and Wales on Thursday and Friday.

On Saturday morning, one flood warning was still in place in Ilston, South Wales, with two flood warnings also issued in the region.

The Environment Agency continued to issue two flood warnings in south-west England, including in densely populated areas around the Lower Avon River.

It was also stated that the risk of flooding causing damage to property and disruption to travel is low across much of southern and central England.

Dan Harris, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “The forecast for later this weekend is reminiscent of this time last week and has greater uncertainties than average.

“This is due to a more complex than normal meteorological pattern, with multiple corridors of severe, locally active thunderstorms rotating around a slow-moving area of low pressure.

“We are monitoring the warnings and will issue them over the weekend as confidence increases, so stay tuned for our latest forecasts and warnings.”

A band of cloud and scattered rain will initially move across England and Wales on Saturday, before a band of heavy thunderstorms reaches the far south later in the day, the Met Office said.

Further north, prolonged sunny and dry spells are still expected, as in recent days, although it will become cloudier and milder.

The showers will continue to move north through Sunday, when heavy rain will fall across large parts of the central and southern areas.

According to the meteorologist, cooler and fresher temperatures are expected across the country until next week, but the outlook is generally uncertain.
