Five Best Screenshots From The Dramatic Week 2 Of The 2024 American Football Season

Every week we watch college football for the drama.

In a matter of hours, a team expected to be a national championship contender can see its title hopes dashed. (I’m looking at you, Notre Dame.) Season-defining field goals are made and missed — and weekends for those watching in the stands are either made or ruined.

In Week 2, we watched the #5 Fighting Irish lose to Northern Illinois, #21 Iowa blow a 13-point lead to Iowa State and witness one of the best postgame interviews you’ll see this season.

Below, without further ado, are the five best screenshots from an action-packed Week 2, featuring some big surprises and crazy moments:

Rabbit in the field

Fox Sport

No, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits weren’t in town to check out Northwestern’s temporary lakefront stadium. A real rabbit stormed the court during the Wildcats’ 26-20 overtime loss to Duke, and it was chased off the field by Northwestern’s mascot, Willie the Wildcat.

Missouri State vs. Ball State

ESPN

You don’t see this very often. Missouri State scored a touchdown against Ball State, but it was overturned because 10 Cardinals players were in an offside huddle near the sideline. The officials didn’t let Missouri State call the penalty either, but they did score again three plays later. This time against a full 11-team defense.

NBC

No one expected Notre Dame to lose on home turf to Northern Illinois, which has never defeated a top-10 team in the program’s 57-year history. But these fans saw it happen, just as they saw the Fighting Irish lose at home to big underdogs in Marshall and Stanford in 2022.

Iowa fan

CBS

Everything went Iowa’s way in the first half of Saturday’s rivalry game between the Hawkeyes and Iowa State. Iowa’s defense held the Cyclones scoreless for two quarters. Even Iowa’s offense looked good.

But in the second half, the Cyclones came back. Kyle Konrardy knocked in a 54-yard field goal with six seconds left to secure a 20-19 victory, leaving many Hawkeyes fans looking like that poor college kid in the photo above.

Thomas Hammock

NBC

Thomas Hammock played four years at Northern Illinois as a running back in the early 2000s. More than 20 years later, he coached the Huskies to the best win in program history, beating No. 5-ranked Notre Dame 16-14 on the road.

Shortly after the win, tears streamed down Hammock’s face as he explained his emotions to reporter Zora Stephenson on the NBC broadcast. It was worth watching.
