Ewers’ passing ‘on point’ as Texas hands Michigan first loss since ’22

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The top 10 opponents continue to bring out the best in Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.

On Saturday, Ewers delivered another gem for the Longhorns, throwing for 246 yards and scoring three touchdowns to beat No. 10 Michigan 31-12 at The Big House.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Ewers is now the only FBS quarterback in the country to throw three touchdowns without an interception against multiple AP top-10 opponents since the start of last season. Ewers also led Texas to a win at Alabama last season.

“There’s something about Quinn’s demeanor. He’s a very calm guy. He’s very collected. He’s never on the emotional roller coaster,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “When you have a quarterback that everybody can believe in, it just feeds that confidence and belief that, ‘Hey, let’s do our part because the guy who’s holding the ball every play is on point.'”

Ewers was once again a hit against the reigning national champions, as the third-ranked Longhorns were able to move the ball at will against a defense that was repeatedly projected as first-round draft picks in the NFL.

Behind Ewers, the Longhorns converted seven of their first eight attempts on third down. Ewers nearly converted on the other, but his 24-yard touchdown strike on the opening drive was negated by a holding call.

After missing a field goal on that first drive, Texas scored on the next four drives to take the lead and go into halftime with a 24-3 lead.

“I just enjoy the big moments,” Ewers said.

With the win, Texas took a big step toward returning to the playoffs after advancing there last year. The Longhorns lost to Washington in the Sugar Bowl semifinals, despite Ewers throwing for 318 yards in the 37-31 loss.

“I thought he played very efficiently,” Sarkisian said of Michigan’s performance. “He got completions. I didn’t feel like there was a throw forced today.”

The 19-point win was Texas’ biggest away win against a top 10 opponent since 1979, when the Longhorns defeated Missouri 21-0. It also gave the Wolverines their first overall loss since falling to TCU in the 2022 College Football Playoff and their first home loss since 2020.

“When we were at Alabama, we were trying to prove not only to ourselves, but to everybody else what kind of team we are,” he said. “Coming here and getting the job done. … It’s kind of the same feeling.”
