Keke Palmer stars in ‘The ‘Burbs’ Peacock series remake of cult film

Peacock has given a direct series order to The ‘suburbs’a contemporary series adaptation of the 1989 Universal Pictures horror comedy film of the same name. Celeste Hughey (Palm Royale, dead to me) writes and produces the mystery comedy series starring Keke Palmer (No, password), also executive producing the project from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Seth MacFarlane (Ted), Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson are serving as executive producers on Fuzzy Door under the company’s UCP agreement, along with Brian Grazer, Kristen Zolner and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment, which produced the 1989 film. Dana Olsen, the writer of the Joe Dante-directed film, will serve as co-executive producer on the series.

The story takes place in contemporary suburbs, The ‘suburbs’ follows a young couple—with Palmer as the wife—who move back into the husband’s childhood home. Their world is turned upside down when new neighbors move in next door, revealing old secrets about the cul-de-sac, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.

The series will be filmed in Los Angeles at the same location as the original 1989 film, the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood.

The film, starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher as the couple, along with Bruce Dern and Corey Feldman, has achieved cult status after an unpromising start at the box office. It is streaming on Peacock.

This is the latest Universal film title to be turned into a series for sister streamer Peacock. The list includes MacFarlane’s Tedwhich has been renewed for a second season.
