Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the first man to score 900 goals

Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first male player in history to score 900 goals in official matches, with his latest milestone reached during the UEFA Nations League match between Portugal and Croatia in Lisbon on Thursday.

Ronaldo scored the historic goal with a volley from six yards out after a cross from Nuno Mendes to put Portugal 2-0 up in the 34th minute. Portugal went on to win 2-1.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is 58 goals ahead of his nearest rival, Lionel Messi, who has 842. Brazilian legend Pele is third on the list with 765.

Ronaldo was also the first to break the 800-goal barrier, which he did in late 2021 during his second spell at Manchester United.

The Portugal captain’s 131 international goals in 209 appearances are also the most ever. Messi is again second behind Ronaldo on that list; he and former Iran striker Ali Daei both have 109 goals.

Besides Al Nassr and Man United, Ronaldo shared his 769 club goals between Sporting CP, Real Madrid and Juventus.

The 39-year-old has made it clear that he has no plans to slow down anytime soon and recently said he is already aiming for his next milestone.

“I want to reach 1,000 goals,” he told former Man United teammate Rio Ferdinand for his YouTube channel, estimating that the historic milestone could be reached around the age of 41. “If I don’t have any injuries, this is the most important (thing) for me, that’s what I want. For me, the best I can achieve in football is to reach 900 goals first. Then my challenge is to reach 1,000 goals.”

The ever-competitive Ronaldo was quick to point out how his goals stood out from those of other all-time top scorers, including legends like Pele and Alfredo Di Stefano, who played in an era before there were so many cameras.

“All the goals I’ve scored have video,” he said. “They all have video. Listen, I respect all of them (Pele and Di Stefano). And if you want more goals, I can take them from training too. And I’ll prove it to people afterwards. They prefer this player, or this is the best. I don’t care.”
