Latest after four people died at Apalachee High School

Last May, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from the FBI about a possible threat to shoot up a high school. The tip came via a Discord chat group, and the office interviewed Colt Gray and his father, Colin.

On May 21, an investigator following up on the tip went to the Grays’ home in Jefferson, Georgia. Colin told the investigator he didn’t have a Discord account, and his son, who was 13 at the time, said he had deleted his account.

“Colt expressed concern that someone was accusing him of threatening to shoot up a school. He stated he would never say something like that, even if he was joking,” according to the incident report obtained by NBC News.

The father told the investigator he had hunting rifles in the home and that Colt “was allowed to use them under supervision, but did not have unfettered access to them,” the report said.

Three tips came into the FBI from different IP addresses: two from different cities in California and one from Western Australia. The tip said the Discord account was linked to the email address “[email protected],” which was owned by Colt Gray, according to the FBI’s information. IP addresses on the account showed it was being used in two different cities in Georgia and possibly Buffalo, New York.

Attached to the tip were several photo attachments with a user profile name in Russian. This translated to Lanza, a reference to the shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

When confronted, Colin Gray said he did not recognize the email address associated with the account and that his son does not speak Russian. The investigator reported that Colin said his son “had some trouble at West Jackson Middle School and now that he’s gone to Jefferson Middle School, things have gotten better.”

Ultimately, due to the “inconsistent nature” of the FBI information, it could not be determined whether Colt or Colin was behind the Discord account.
