Labor Day is a federal holiday that celebrates “the social and economic achievements of American workers” and has its origins in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday “in recognition of the many contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of America,” according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, and by 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday on June 28, 1894.
