Brian Kelly criticizes team after USC loss: ‘You have to have a killer instinct in this game’

LSU shouldn’t be happy about starting their third straight 0-1 season. Brian Kelly clearly isn’t either, judging from what he had to say after Sunday’s game.

Kelly expressed his frustration with the Tigers during his press conference following No. 13 LSU’s 27-20 loss to No. 23 USC. He said it’s the first time in his three-year tenure as head coach that he’s been so angry with his team.

“This is the first time since I’ve been here (at LSU) that I’ve been mad at my football team,” Kelly said.

“We played a couple of guys out of their asses tonight and here we are again – here we are again talking about the same things!” Kelly said as he pounded the table. “About not finishing when you have an opponent in a position to knock them away. But what we do on the sideline is feel like the game is over. I’m so angry about it that I have to do something about it. I’m not doing a good enough job as a coach.”

“Unfortunately, it’s clear that when we get up in a game, we don’t know how to conduct ourselves,” Kelly said. “You’ve got to have a killer instinct in this game. You’ve got to put teams away. We had a chance to put this team away. We get complacent, we make more mistakes when we’re ahead instead of having, you know, better focus and a steely, killer instinct. It’s disappointing.”
