Paris 2024 Paralympic Games: Amy Truesdale, Matt Bush win back-to-back gold in taekwondo

Amy Truesdale won gold in spectacular fashion in Para-Taekwondo, before Matt Bush himself took gold at the Paralympic Games in Paris.

Truesdale, 35, won 8-2 over Guljonoy Naimova of Uzbekistan in the final of the women’s K44 +65kg category but was nearly disqualified with 65 seconds left on the clock after accidentally kicking Naimova in the face.

Despite being medically cleared to continue, Naimova withdrew, handing Truesdale the victory at the Grand Palais.

“I don’t think it sunk in,” said Truesdale, who celebrated his achievement by doing a cartwheel on the mat before doing the splits.

“I thought, ‘I don’t know what to do to celebrate,’ but for me this is the last medal I need to complete my Para Taekwondo career.

“I’m a Paralympic champion, I’ve made history, I’m the first person to do that and I’m so grateful for all the support. I think I’m just going to cry by myself for 20 minutes after the medal ceremony.”

Shortly afterwards, the 35-year-old two-time world champion Bush defeated neutral Paralympic athlete Aliaskhab Ramazanov 5-0 in the men’s K44 +80kg final.

“I’ve fought him before, quite a few times,” he said. “He’s a very good fighter and I had to be on top of him and that comes down to making a game plan. It was tough, it was tough, but I had to fight.”
