TCU Football: Stanford Halftime Report

The rest position is currently Stanford 17 TCU 10

TCU fans got their first look at new defensive coordinator Andy Avalos to start the games, as the Frogs lost the coin toss and were on defense. On four separate third down opportunities, the Horned Frogs were given either an unnecessary roughness penalty or a facemask. Stanford would drop the ball, but recover, setting up first and goal. The Horned Frogs would allow a touchdown, making the score Stanford 7, TCU 0 with just over eight minutes left.

The Horned Frogs got the ball back and did what they did best: quick passes and inside runs that destroyed the defense for 8+ yards. Salvation Williams made his presence known and made it known quickly. It was the catch of a six-yard fade pass from Josh Hoover for TCU’s first touchdown of the season, making it 7-7 with 1:16 remaining.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: STANFORD 7, TCU 7

The new defense got their first stop of the day after some incredibly well-set blitzes from Andy Avalos, giving the offense the ball with 13:20 left in the second quarter.

The attack would not last long. John Paul Richardson would drop the ball on TCU’s 21 yard line and Stanford would take the best field position.

After the defense did a fantastic job in the red zone, limiting Stanford to a fourth down, they opted to try it on fourth-and-goal, and the Horned would fall behind 14-7 for Stanford with 9:19 to go.

TCU didn’t do much with the ball and marched the length of the field to Stanford’s 27-yard line, where they went for the ball on fourth down and gave the ball to Stanford with 5:27 left on the clock.

Stanford would learn that college football is a give-and-take game and would lose the ball afterwards. Tymon Mitchell would catch a deflected pass for a TCU interception on the next play.

TCU couldn’t get much going and was stymied in the red zone and had to settle for a field goal, while the freshmen Kyle Lemmerman would secretly bring it in to increase the score Stanford 14 TCU 10 with just over four minutes left to play.

The Horned Frogs defense came into action with less than two minutes left, primarily the cornerbacks (Jamel Johnson, JaTravis Broughton), and held Stanford to a field goal, tying the score Stanford 17, TCU 10 with 1:37 to go.

TCU ran the length of the field, but a misstep on a failed snap between Hoover and Cam Kok would result in TCU losing the ball with 13 seconds left in the first half.

The Horned Frogs will have a lot to make up for in the second half of the season. After many costly penalties and uncharacteristic mistakes, the team will have to be sharp to fight back and win this game.
