Cowboys give star receiver huge extension

CeeDee Lamb has a whole pile of money. But the Dallas Cowboys still have a lot to figure out.

Coming off the best season of his four-year career — yet a litany of mixed messages from team owner Jerry Jones over the summer — the All-Pro wideout finally agreed to a four-year, $136 million extension with “America’s Team” on Monday, ensuring he’ll remain a part of Dallas’ foundation well into the future. A person familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal is not yet official, confirmed details of the agreement to Tyler Dragon of USA TODAY Sports. (ESPN was first to report on Lamb’s new contract.)

Lamb joins Justin Jefferson, AJ Brown, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Tyreek Hill among wideouts earning more than $30 million per year on average, with the entire quintet meeting or surpassing that benchmark this year. Lamb’s $34 million annual average salary is behind only Jefferson ($35 million) for the most in league history among non-quarterbacks. Lamb received a $38 million signing bonus, setting a record at the position, while pulling in $100 million in total guaranteed pay.

The four-year structure of the deal is also important — and mirrors the contract length of quarterback Dak Prescott — because it gives Lamb an earlier chance to return to the negotiating table if his performance continues to improve.

Lamb’s 135 catches and 1,749 receiving yards in 2023 both set single-season records for the Cowboys, a team that has fielded seven Hall of Fame wide receivers and many other highly capable ones over the years. Lamb, 25, a Pro Bowler in three of his four seasons, could follow a Canton path himself, having recorded 395 catches for 5,145 yards and 32 touchdowns since being drafted 17th overall out of Oklahoma in 2020. Only Jefferson, Michael Thomas and Hall of Famer Randy Moss have more receiving yards in four NFL seasons.

The end of the Lamb stalemate is good news for a team that added little during free agency this year, lost pass rusher Sam Williams to a torn ACL early in training camp and is expected to be without All-Pro corner DaRon Bland for up to two months after it was announced he will require foot surgery.

Lamb was set to earn $18 million in 2024, the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. He worked out in Houston this summer while sitting out training camp. With his affairs settled, the 2024 wideout market appears all but crystallized, though San Francisco 49ers holdout Brandon Aiyuk and the Cincinnati Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase are still seeking their own salaries.

While securing Lamb was a major goal for the Cowboys, his immediate and long-term futures still remain fraught with questions. The biggest one revolves around Prescott, who is scheduled to hit free agency after next season and currently has a $55.1 million salary cap hit in 2024, trailing only fellow Cleveland Browns tight end Deshaun Watson ($63.8 million). The 2023 MVP runner-up, Prescott figures to have nearly all of the leverage in whatever negotiations he and the Cowboys have and has already hinted that he’s realistic about the idea of playing elsewhere in 2025.

And other big decisions come next year. All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons, who recently became eligible for an extension, will likely have to wait until next offseason to get his bag — when, in addition to Prescott, All-Pro guard Zack Martin, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence and receiver Brandin Cooks are all expiring contracts.

But Lamb won’t do that, and that’s at least a start.
