KOLKATA: An important aspect of the ongoing CBI investigation in the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical resident at RG Kar Medical College concerns the 53 items seized by Kolkata police, including “nine incriminating articles” recovered from the main suspect Sanjay Roysuch as the clothing, underwear and sandals he wore during the crime.
The inventory includes critical digital proof such as the location of telephone masts, which Roy placed at the crime scene during the attack in the hospital seminar room on August 9. Roy’s bicycle and helmet were also seized as evidence.
CBI sources said on Saturday that forensic reportsexpected in batches over the next few days will be crucial to the case. Of particular importance are the 40 pieces of evidence collected from the crime scene by the state forensic laboratory between 8:30 and 10:45 p.m. on August 9. The entire process was videotaped in the presence of local witnesses, including doctors.
The extraction of data from Roy’s cloned mobile phone, carried out in court by experts under the supervision of a magistrate, is another piece of vital digital evidence. CCTV footage from two hospital cameras – number 8 and number 16 – also shows Roy on the premises, which will be submitted as part of the case.
Further evidence was collected at the crime scene by fingerprint and footprint experts from the scientific wing of the detective department. Roy’s medical report, detailing injuries to his left cheek, left hand and the back of his left thigh, will be used as evidence of his involvement.
Roy’s blood samples, which are being collected for comparison with samples found at the crime scene, are also critical to the forensic analysis.
A request has been made to the Kolkata Police Traffic Control Centre and a nationalised bank in the city’s Shyambazar area for preserving CCTV footage relevant to the case. These will be included in the digital evidence that CBI plans to submit in the chargesheet in court, sources in the central agency said.
