Commanders build statue in honor of Sean Taylor

The commanders are build a statue in honor of Sean Taylor. This makes the late safety the first former player to be honored with a statue by the team, reports ESPN’s John Keim.

The organization removed a memorial to Taylor from inside the stadium after it was criticized for its lack of authenticity. The original installation had the wrong jersey — Reebok instead of Nike — and did not have pieces of tape covering his face mask, as Taylor did during games.

The franchise adjusted the setup with those changes, adding the correct style socks and boots from Taylor’s time playing (2004-2007).

Taylor, whose number 21 was retired in 2022, was murdered in November 2007.

The commanders informed the Taylor family that they had removed the installation inside the stadium in favor of a statue outside the stadium.

“After careful consideration, we as an organization have decided to remove the Sean Taylor installation from Commanders Field,” a team spokesperson said in a statement. “We realize the installation falls short of honoring one of our franchise’s most iconic players. We are working with the Taylor family on a plan, including the unveiling of a statue, that will rightfully honor Sean’s legacy and impact on our organization, fan base and community. The Washington Commanders are committed to honoring our legends in a first-class manner.”

Hall of Famer Darrell Green will see his number 28 retired at halftime of a Week 7 game against Carolina, joining Taylor, Sammy Baugh (33), Bobby Mitchell (49) and Sonny Jurgensen (9).
