Dustin Wolf signs new contract with Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames are looking to shore up the future of their crease. News broke that Dustin Wolf has signed a new contract with the club. The restricted free agent signed a deal worth $850k over two years.

Dustin Wolf re-signs with Flames

Wolf has started some time on the show with the Flames. He has played in 18 games over two seasons in his NHL career. The Gilroy, California native got 17 games this season and went 7-7-1 with a 3.16 goals-against-average and .893 save percentage. Those numbers may not seem like great numbers, but he did show some growth in limited duty with the Flames.

The 23-year-old owns a career record of 8-7-1 with a 3.03 goals-against-average and a .896 save percentage. Calgary originally drafted him in the seventh round, 214th overall, of the 2019 NHL Draft. Wolf played for the Everett Silvertips of the WHL, earning numerous honors with the club. He is also a two-time AHL Goaltender of the Year for the Calgary Wranglers. The young goaltender also represented the United States internationally at the World Junior Championships.

What it means

The uncertain future of the Calgary crease is becoming a little clearer for GM Craig Conroy. Jacob Markstrom and Daniel Vladar have guarded the blue paint in recent seasons. Wolf, however, is eager to prove he can be an NHL starter.

Many thought Markstrom would be traded at the deadline, but that time has come this summer. Wolf should get more chances to test his mettle against the top scorers once the goalie question in Alberta is answered. The future in net now belongs to Wolf as the Flames turn a new leaf on the youth side of things. This is a great deal for both parties.
