What looked like a regular chase at Pallekele quickly turned into chaos as India unleashed a bunch of part-timers on a winding track to strangle Sri Lanka.

From 23 off 24 balls with eight wickets remaining, Sri Lanka collapsed to 137/8, losing six wickets in the space of 22 runs, with the scores level. More than the result, it was the manner in which it unfolded that had the fans in a frenzy. Suryakumar Yadav enhanced his captaincy credentials with a left-field move, bowling Rinku Singh and himself in the final two overs to stop Lanka on their heels and force a draw.

Earlier, the collapse had begun when Washington Sundar took wickets off successive balls in the 17th over. The match was still Sri Lanka’s to lose with Kusal Perera still in the middle and batting on 46. But Rinku’s off-spin saw the left-hander’s dismissal and panic in the hosts’ camp. They lost wickets in quick succession as India choked off the flow of runs and forced a Super Over.

It doesn’t matter who wins the super over, the man of the match award should go to SKY. Not even in the wildest imagination with 9 runs required from the last 2 overs with 6 wickets in hand, no captain would have taken the option of bowling Rinku and SKY in the 19th and 20th overs.
