Whether it’s taking a stroll in one of Louisville’s many parks or going out to dinner, there are countless ways mothers (or other parents or caregivers serving as such) can celebrate National Daughters Day with their child.

National Daughters Day started far beyond Kentucky, but the United States has adopted the day in recent years to honor the bond between mother and daughter.

Here’s what you need to know about National Daughters Day:

When is National Daughter’s Day 2024?

According to the National Daughters’ Day Calendar, September 25 is National Daughters’ Day.

Today in the US

National Daughters Day was first celebrated in India, where daughters were often less valued than sons and therefore received less attention. It was adopted in the US in the early 2000s to honor the unique bond between parents and their daughters.

How do you celebrate National Daughter’s Day?

Celebrating the occasion doesn’t have to be an expensive and elaborate plan. There are several ways to celebrate National Daughter’s Day:

  • Spend quality time together: Go shopping, plan a dinner, go for a walk. As long as your daughter is the focus, any activity is time well spent.
  • Show your gratitude by letting your daughter know how much you love and cherish her: A simple “I love you” or maybe a small gift can show her how you feel.
  • Join the conversation: Family life can sometimes get so busy that it’s hard to find time to really talk, so take some time to make up for that by chatting with your daughter and sharing stories and memories of your time together.
  • Empower your daughter: Encourage her to pursue her dreams, explore her interests, and believe in herself so she can reach her full potential.
