This month, Americans can order free COVID-19 tests

WASHINGTON (AP) — Starting this month, Americans will can order free COVID-19 test kits who will be sent to their homes.

American households can order as many as four nasal swabs COVIDTests.gov when the federal program reopens. The U.S. Health and Human Services agency that oversees the program has not yet given an exact date when ordering can begin.

An agency spokesperson has said the tests will detect current strains of the virus and can be ordered ahead of the holidays, when families and friends gather for celebrations.

US regulators approved this last month an updated COVID-19 vaccine designed to combat the recent strains of the virus and hopefully the upcoming winter strains as well. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already recommended this fall’s shot for everyone 6 months and older.

Although most Americans have some degree of immunity from previous infections or vaccinations or both, that protection is waning. The photos from last fall focused on a different part of the coronavirus family tree, one that is no longer circulating.
