Singing janitor who’s never been on a plane wins ‘America’s Got Talent’

In a true story of getting rich from your dirty rags, singing janitor Richard Goodall won the 19th season of “America’s Got Talent” during the season finale on Sept. 24.

Host Terry Crews called it “one of the best seasons I can remember” and introduced the two finalists, Goodall and dance team Roni Sagi and Rhythm, before revealing that Goodall was the winner of the $1 million grand prize.

After he was announced the winner, streamers fell from the rafters onto the stage as the audience cheered and judge Heidi Klum ran onto the stage to give Goodall a hug.

When asked how he felt after his win, Goodall referred to earlier comments from judge Simon Cowell about how quickly a person’s fortunes can change.

“Simon (Cowell) says two minutes can change your life. My life has been transformed and I have done it,” he said.

“I’m so happy for you, Richard!” Klum cheered. “I’m so happy! I love you. Thank you, America.”

Goodall, a Terre Haute, Indiana native, has been a fan favorite since he first appeared on the show, winning the Golden Buzzer over Klum on the May 28 episode after singing a cover of Journey’s classic “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which he also got to perform during the finale with members of the band.

Goodall also reaped the rewards of his newfound stardom: he was flown to California to appear on the show, his first time on a plane.

“Oh my gosh, guys. I’ve never been on a plane,” he said after receiving the Golden Buzzer. “This wasn’t on my radar to come to California. It’s just a dream come true.”

As the season progressed, it became clear to the judges that Goodall was a powerhouse.

“I don’t know what it is about you, Richard, but I just have a tiny little soft spot in my heart for you,” Klum told him after he performed Michael Bolton’s “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” on the August 13 episode.

“And if you make it, you really have a chance to win this whole competition,” Cowell told him.

Goodall still can’t believe he won.

“The audition, I flew out at the last minute,” he told People. “Never been on a plane, never been west of Missouri, and I was just going to fly out, sing a song, fly back home, and maybe tell somebody I was on the show and make a little YouTube video like everybody else. Never dreamed of that (here).”

Winning the show is perhaps the second biggest thing to happen to Goodall this week. During the finale, he revealed that he is married.

“She’s the love of my life. I love her so much,” he said of his new bride after performing “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Goodall is still trying to understand what his hectic week was like.

“My brain is just all mush at this point. Surreal doesn’t even begin to describe what happened,” he told People. “This has been an absolute rollercoaster and now it’s ended with absolute gold dust flying everywhere.”

When it comes to winning “America’s Got Talent,” Goodall says it’s an unparalleled accomplishment. “There are bucket lists and there are top-shelf bucket lists,” he said. “You didn’t even know it was there at the top of the shelf. This is definitely, a bucket list (item) that I couldn’t even (think about) or dream about.”
