We barely made it to the back nine in the Presidents Cup on Thursday and there is already some bad blood between the American and international teams. The most shocking part? It seems to be between best friends Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim.

It started with what seemed like harmless nonsense, with Kim making a long birdie putt on the par-3 seventh and celebrating accordingly. Then Scheffler responded and shouted, “WHAT WAS THAT?!” towards Kim. Kim laughed it off, but Scheffler certainly didn’t look like he was messing around.

On the next green, Kim and partner Sungjae Im were the first to hole a birdie putt. The international duo then walked off the green and headed to the ninth tee. The problem? Scheffler still had a birdie look to even the hole and keep his and Russell Henley’s lead by two. During a normal tour event, finishing up and walking to the next tee while a playing partner has yet to finish is a great way to keep the pace of play moving. During a match play, team event where your opponent still has a putt to tie? That’s a no-no.

Course commentator John Wood immediately pointed to Kim and Im’s departure, saying: “Things are definitely a bit unsettled in this group at the moment.” Analyst Paul McGinley then asked Wood “so they (Scheffler) can’t see the well?”

“They’re standing 60 yards away on the ninth tee and they’re not looking,” Wood replied.

NBC play-by-play man Dan Hicks cleverly turned on McGinley immediately afterward, asking, “What do you think of that, Paul?” McGinley didn’t hold back.

“That borders on bad behavior right there,” McGinley said. “That’s disrespectful in my opinion. I know it’s competitive out there, but it certainly shows that there’s an underlying benefit that it’s not all fun and games.”

Scheffler then missed the putt, giving Kim and I a much-needed win to tie the match at 1. They made it to the ninth, then Scheffler drained a 25-footer for birdie on the 10th, prompting a muted reaction. Kim followed by holing his 6-footer to halve the birdie. After 10 holes, Scheffler and Henley are still leading, 1 lead. Should be a very, very interesting ending to this match. Let’s hope everyone is on their best behavior.
