Morton doubles makes for exciting draw for men’s hockey

Two goals from Lee Morton ensured Team GB made a thrilling comeback to draw 2-2 with the Netherlands in Pool A of the men’s hockey competition.

After a difficult first half, in which neither team was willing to give an inch, a fine goal from Floris Wortelboer and Thijs van Dam ensured that GB were on their heels in the match.

But in the presence of Princess Anne, who wore a smart Team GB hat to shield herself from the scorching Parisian heat, Morton scored two more stunning goals in the closing stages to secure a precious point.

β€œIt was incredible,” Morton said.

“We found it quite tough to be 2-0 down, so to come back in the last few minutes and salvage a point was good. We have an unbeaten record and generally we are very good.”

After beating Spain 4-0 in their opening match, Revington’s team had to come from behind to draw 2-2 with South Africa. Their resilience was on full display in an epic encounter with the Netherlands, who they could easily face again in the medal matches.

After a difficult first half, Wortelboer scored with a reverse stick late in the third quarter and Van Dam scored again early in the fourth quarter.

GB only responded after the second goal had been scored, when Morton zigzagged through the penalty area and slotted the ball home, halving the deficit.

Revington’s team went wild in the closing minutes when Rupert Shipperley forced a fine save at the near post from 2023 World Goalkeeper of the Year Pirmin Blaak.

Blaak had no chance when the ball was beautifully above the ground and Morton fired in the equaliser, silencing the predominantly Dutch crowd.

Host country France will play Great Britain in Pool A on Thursday as they bid to win their first gold medal in men’s hockey since 1988.

Morton said: β€œFor me the biggest thing is that it has been 16 years since a Scottish man has been at the Olympic Games for hockey.

“To reset that clock and hopefully inspire future generations that we have Scottish athletes for the men at every Olympic Games. It’s been a long time coming, I see this as an opportunity to reset the clock and hopefully we have more Scottish athletes in the years to come.”
