Man United didn’t give 100 percent in draw against Twente – Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag questioned the mentality of his players after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with FC Twente in the Europa League. He said the Dutch team “fought for every meter and we didn’t.”

United led through a first-half goal from Christian Eriksen, but were pushed back in the second half when Sam Lammers took advantage of an Eriksen error to score the equaliser.

Eriksen said afterwards that FC Twente “wanted more” and when the assessment was presented to Ten Hag, the United manager agreed.

“Yes, you could see it was the game of their lives,” Ten Hag said. “They fought for every metre and we didn’t and 99 per cent is not enough, you have to give 100 per cent.

“You have to kill the game, you have to finish it. You have to go for the second goal and then you kill the game.

“We are very ambitious and when you have ambition you have to perform, prove your point. Especially today in the second half we were too complacent, we didn’t get it over the line and we didn’t play as a team.”

Ten Hag was particularly disappointed that United could not take advantage of more chances. The away match against Crystal Palace ended in a 0-0 draw on Saturday and despite 19 attempts against Twente, they only managed to score one goal.

Finding the net has been a problem all season, with United scoring just five goals in five Premier League games.

“We need to work on that,” Ten Hag said. “That’s also clear. We need to be more clinical in situations like that, but I don’t think that was the only problem tonight. We need to keep going in the second half. Be more consistent. Finish it, score the second goal and the game is over.

“We have enough players up front who can score.”
