Manchester United began their Europa League campaign with a 1-1 draw after drawing level with FC Twente at a rainy Old Trafford on Wednesday, with Christian Eriksen’s goal cancelled out by Dutch striker Sam Lammers.

The first half was exciting, with an early attempt by Twente’s Lammers, which however went wide of the post.

Eriksen put United ahead ten minutes before half-time with a powerful curling shot into the top corner from inside the penalty area.

Twente equalised in the 68th minute when Lammers scored a fine goal that passed United keeper André Onana at the near post.

Joshua Zirkzee tried to put United back in the lead a few minutes later with a shot from a wide angle, but Twente keeper Lars Unnerstall saved the ball.

Bruno Fernandes came close to scoring for United in the dying minutes with a curling shot into the top corner, but the home side struggled to break through Twente’s deep defence, who seemed content with an away equaliser.
