Jose Mourinho immediately overtakes Carlo Ancelotti and makes European history in the Europa League opener

Jose Mourinho wasted little time in making history during Fenerbahce’s Europa League clash with Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Special One led the Turkish national team in Europe for the very first time on Thursday in the opening match of the competition phase of the European second-level competition.

And in doing so, he set a new record as soon as the referee blew for kick-off.

Fenerbahce are now the ninth team Mourinho has managed in European competition.

This means he has now surpassed the joint record he had with Carlo Ancelotti, who has managed eight different clubs in Europe.

Mourinho has now led Benfica, Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and now Fenerbahce to Europe.

He has also won a major European competition with eight of those nine teams.

As well as being content with the competition in Europe, Mourinho also has a pretty impressive record when it comes to silverware.

The Portuguese boss has won five different European titles in club football.

His first was the UEFA Cup which he won with Porto in 2003, something he followed up with the Champions League the following year.

Mourinho also won the Champions League in 2010 as manager of Italian giants Inter Milan.

He then won the Europa League – formerly the UEFA Cup – with Manchester United in 2017, before winning the Europa Conference League crown with Roma in 2022.

However, Ancelotti has won 11 European titles, including five Champions League crowns as a manager – a record for the competition.

As for Mourinho’s hopes of adding another European trophy, he hopes current club Fenerbahce can put in a strong performance.

They certainly got their season off to a strong start, with Union Saint-Gilloise leading 1-0 at half-time in their League Phase opener.

They went on to win 2-0, making it a perfect start to their campaign.

This came just a few days after he refused to attend his press conference following Fenerbahçe’s 3-1 defeat to rivals Galatasaray.

In a social media post, Galatasaray called him ‘The Crying One’, before sharing a photo of their own manager Okan Buruk calling him ‘The winner’.

Mourinho did stop to talk to a journalist as he left the stadium, where he was shown this fake post from Galatasaray.

An understandably prickly Mourinho responded: “Are you serious or are you joking?”

He then left the interview.
