According to the National Hurricane Center, Helene has strengthened into a hurricane and is moving across the Gulf of Mexico and toward the United States.

The storm hit the Yucatan Peninsula Wednesday morning, strengthening into a hurricane with winds of 80 mph and is expected to move toward Florida.

Where in the US is Tropical Storm Helene expected to make landfall?

The storm is expected to make landfall near the Florida panhandle as a major hurricane with sustained winds in excess of 110 mph. The storm will then move northward through Georgia and into central Tennessee as a tropical depression before curling westward into Kentucky.

Will Delaware Be Hit by Hurricane Helene?

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Delaware is clear of the storm, although it is possible that its path could shift. The greater concern is a non-tropical low pressure area several hundred miles east of Delaware.

The storm has a less than 10% chance of developing into a cyclone. However, it could cause large waves and rip currents on Delaware beaches.

Patrick O’Hara, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, said the storm could produce big waves, but it could take some time for that to happen.

“The waves and rip currents could become even stronger over the weekend,” O’Hara said.

Delaware weather forecast

There is a 30-40% chance of showers Thursday through Saturday with highs reaching the upper 70s to low 80s, according to the National Weather Service. Sunday will be partly sunny, less humid with highs reaching the lower 70s.
