“Megalopolis” is finally going to hit theaters. Cinephiles have been moaning about Francis Ford Coppola’s latest saga for months – despite all the drama surrounding it – and now they’re finally getting to see the polarizing and crazy film.

To its credit, Lionsgate is trying to preserve the theatrical experience that Cannes audiences got when the film premiered. That includes one of the most talked about scenes in the film: the “Megalopolis” live scene with Adam Driver.

In the film, Cesar Catalina (driver) answers questions from reporters during a press conference, with his face shown in close-up. The reporter’s question to him comes from off-screen, but when the Cannes audience and others saw it, a live person standing in front of the audience was the one answering the questions so Catalina could respond.

It’s an adorable, fourth-wall-breaking moment that’s been a fan favorite since Cannes. That was carried through Monday night’s IMAX Experience screenings, in which the studio recruited a number of special guests to be the ones who approached the screen and asked Driver’s character a scripted question. 60 different locations where the film was shown all had a live component. For example, during the screening in Los Angeles, entertainment journalist Scott Mantz was asked to come to the front of the room with a microphone.

Some fans have shared videos and photos of the moment from their respective screening rooms, and in some cases the guest is given a microphone or stands on a raised stage platform. In the case of a screening on Monday at the AMC Veterans 24 in Tampa that IndieWire was in attendance, there was no spotlight on the chosen audience member, but a microphone stand was set up before the start of the film. However, the lighting situation made it difficult to decipher, as you can see in the photo below.

When the film opens widely this weekend, IndieWire can confirm that, as with the IMAX experience screenings, select theaters will recruit another performer to attend the screening, move up and join the live scene with the character of Driver.

These ‘Megalopolis’ screenings will be labeled ‘The Ultimate Experience’ when you purchase your tickets, and each screening will feature in what Lionsgate calls a ‘Live Participant’ as part of the film. While most will also appear on IMAX or PLF screens, there are a handful of experiences available on standard screens.

It is quite a major logistical challenge, so unfortunately the Live Participant will not be shown at all locations and screenings. The film premieres this weekend on 1,700 screens and 200 IMAX locations. At the time of writing, 34 different showtimes on Fridays and Saturdays offer the ultimate experience, and these include 23 different markets across North America, although more may be added later. Those without this will have a more traditional voiceover subbing of the audio track instead of the live person.

Rumors have circulated that theater workers might be asked to step in temporarily, or that random members of the public might be recruited to participate, but such options don’t seem entirely feasible. What happens or how you’ll be asked to participate when “Megalopolis” finally hits home video or streaming.

On Monday, Coppola took part in an actual Q&A that was streamed live to attendees ahead of the film, during which the author chatted with Robert De Niro and Spike Lee. Coppola elaborated on Donald Trump and the looming presidential election in November, saying he feared America would have an “emperor” leading the country within months.

Megalopolis is expected to have a fairly modest opening weekend of $5 million at the domestic box office, but reports indicate that the financial burden will fall on Coppola himself, and not Lionsgate. Coppola self-financed the film on a $120 million budget and now took on the marketing and distribution costs to get the film to the big screen. We suspect it wasn’t cheap to get live artists on that rollout either.

But Coppola himself wrote the textbook “Live Cinema and Its Techniques,” a 2017 book in which he argued that digital technology would enable real-time advancements and innovations in films, in the same way that talkies revolutionized the form. Now the public gets a chance to see if he’s right.
