Dancing with the stars has brought the “con” into disrepute. Not everyone was happy to hear convicted con artist Anna Delvey (or Sorokin) say she had been given permission by ICE to travel out of state as one of the contestants on season 33 of the dance competition. (Hey, house arrest didn’t stop her from landing a podcast and reality show deal.) Before the Sept. 17 ABC premiere, Delvey proposed to Entertainment tonight that she’s not nervous — “what’s the worst that can happen? They’re not going to arrest me for bad dancing” — and joked in a People featurette that she hopes “the government” will cheer for her. But what about all those complaints that Delvey is not allowed to perform on TV? DWTS Showrunner Conrad Green responded to the negative reactions and said Variety“We’ve had other people on the show who have had criminal problems in the past. She’s done her time. I think it’s absolutely right that she’s on the show, and I think people have been really curious about her achievements.” If you don’t have time for all that fuss, you’re in luck – here’s everything Anna Delvey got up to during her two-week stint on Dancing with the stars.

She works late because she has a scammer singer dancer. For the final performance of the evening, a curly-haired Delvey performed a cha-cha to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” featuring a bedazzled anklet and new pro Ezra Sosa. Delvey, described by the hosts as a “fashionista and entrepreneur,” acknowledged in her introductory package that people might associate her with grand larceny, but insisted she hopes to show “a different side” of herself on DWTS. “My past shows that I’m pretty determined and it’s a good quality to channel something positive,” she said. The real-life inspiration for Netflix’s Inventing Anna added: “I’ve reinvented myself many times, and this time I’m becoming a ballroom dancer.”

After the performance, judge Carrie Ann Inaba noted that there was a “shift in the energy” in the room once Delvey hit the floor. Inaba urged the audience to “give this a shot” and focus on the dancing. For that, Delvey and Sosa were awarded 18 out of 30 points — not the best, but not the worst either. What did Delvey have to say after receiving her score? “I’m glad I don’t have to do this dance again.” She didn’t say whether she’d do another one, but she has no choice; no one went home tonight (but there will be a double elimination next week).

During Oscars night, Ezra and fashionista Anna danced to “Suddenly I See” for The devil wears Prada while Anna has her own Andy moment, feeling “angry” at all the negative comments about her participation in the show. However, Julia Fox (her Nigel, in effect) stepped into the rehearsal studio to give her some sisterly advice. “When you’re young, you might do things that you’re ashamed of later. But it’s all been so public for you, so it’s a good thing we get to see your moment now,” Fox tells her during rehearsals. In a confessional, Fox tries to convince the audience to give Delvey some mercy, explaining: “It’s sad to see all people being so mean, because if it was their sister or their mother, they’d all get a second chance.” Before turning back to Delvey as the dance begins, Fox promises that she will “win America’s hearts.”

On the dance floor, Delvey received even more positive feedback, despite her low scores. Carrie Ann Inaba felt that she was still “holding back a little bit”, but had “nice lines” when dancing. Derek Hough noticed a “softness” in her performance, telling her: “I started to see Anna as a person, not just the persona”, before giving her some technical feedback on her elbows. Delvey and Sosa were awarded 17 out of 30 points in this round, a tough score considering she was unfortunately eliminated at the end of the night, along with Tori Spelling and Pasha Pashkov.

When asked what she would take away from the competition after being sent home, Delvey stayed in character and replied: “Nothing” as the credits rolled.
