Coastal schools announce closures for Thursday

HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) – Several schools along Mississippi’s Gulf Coast have announced closures in anticipation of Francine, which is expected to make landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday as a Category 2 hurricane. Some have extended their closures from Wednesday through Thursday.

  • Hancock County School District closes all schools on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12.
  • Christian University Academy is closed on Wednesday, September 11.
  • The Bay St. Louis-Waveland School District is closed on Wednesday 11 September and Thursday 12 September.
  • Biloxi School District will close all schools on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12.
  • Harrison County School District closes all schools on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12.
  • Pass Christian School District will close all schools on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12.
  • Coast Episcopal School in Long Beach is closed on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12.
  • Pascagoula-Gautier School District is closed on Wednesday, September 11. On Wednesday at 6:00 PM it will be decided whether the schools will open on Thursday.
  • Jackson County School District will be closed through Thursday, September 12. “Since Hurricane Francine is not yet fully over, we have decided to close the school tomorrow as a precautionary measure,” the district said in a news release Wednesday.
  • Moss Point School District is closed on Wednesday, September 11.
  • All schools within the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi is closed on Wednesday 11 September and Thursday 12 September.
  • George County School District is closed on Wednesday 11 September and Thursday 12 September. From Friday 13 September the school will be open again according to the normal timetable.
  • Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will be closed on Wednesday, September 11. All in-person classes are canceled and all campus facilities will remain closed, with the exception of the cafeteria and residence halls on the Perkinston Campus.
  • Full Life Christian Academy in Hurley is closed on Wednesday 11 September.
  • Stone County School District is closed on Wednesday, September 11.
  • Long Beach School District is closed on Wednesday, September 11.
  • William Carey University will close all locations on Wednesday, September 11, including campuses in Tradition/Biloxi, Hattiesburg and Baton Rouge. A decision on campus closures for Thursday will be made Wednesday evening.
  • Ocean Springs School District will be closed through Thursday, September 12. “As soon as weather conditions permit, our crews will begin work to assess our facilities and prepare them for opening on Friday,” OSSD said in a press release Wednesday.
  • Gulfport School District is closed on Wednesday 11 September and Thursday 12 September.
  • The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus will be closed on Wednesday, September 11. The Hattiesburg campus will transition to off-campus activities.
