After a summer of record heat, Phoenix has done it again and is ready for an unprecedented week of high temperatures. Again.

The highest temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reached 113 degrees on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record of 108 set in 1989.

Oh, and the scorcher also set a new record for last more than 110 days in the city, previously September 19, 2010.

The record highs will continue through the week, said Gabriel Lojero, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix. A heatwave is forecast over the next six to seven days and temperatures are expected to rise even higher.

The cause is obviously a high-pressure system hanging over the region, along with clear skies and no chance of rain.

“Every time we have a blocking pattern like that, the weather system moves very slowly,” Lojero said.

For comparison, according to the National Weather Service, the average high temperature for this time of year is about 97 degrees.
