The philanthropistpublished at 8:30 am British Summer Time

The Tatas enjoy enormous goodwill in India, partly due to their philanthropic work. The Tata Trusts, which are engaged in philanthropic activities, own 66% of the share capital of Tata Sons, and dividends are used to support the work of the trusts.

The company has been regularly donating to sectors such as education, healthcare and environment for decades, fully or partially financing many prestigious institutions in India and abroad.

Ratan Tata continued this legacy.

He donated 5 billion rupees ($59.5 million; £45.5 million) to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, helped victims of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and set up several cancer detection centers in remote areas of the country.

In his personal capacity, he has donated millions to his alma maters, Harvard Business School and Cornell University.
