Veteran lands on IR, Prospect moves to AHL as Golden Knights announce opening night roster

The Vegas Golden Knights have released their opening roster, which does not feature William Karlsson, who will start the season on the IR, and Brendan Brisson, who will move to the main AHL with the Henderson Silver Knights.

The Golden Knights made two moves on the waiver wire yesterday by filing claims for Raphael Lavoie and Cole Schwindt. After making successful claims, the Golden Knights opted to keep them on their NHL roster and assign Brisson to the Silver Knights.

Karlsson landing on IR isn’t a surprise at this point, but two weeks ago it would have been. HC Bruce Cassidy claimed the maintenance was for injury-related reasons. Missing a training session or two due to maintenance work is normal, but once that was over it became clear that the 31-year-old had something more important to deal with.

Without Karlsson, the Golden Knights will carry thirteen forwards: Ivan Barbashev, Pavel Dorofeyev, Jack Eichel, Tomas Hertl, Alexander Holtz, Brett Howden, Keegan Kolesar, Raphael Lavoie, Victor Olofsson, Tanner Pearson, Nicolas Roy, Cole Schwindt and Mark Steen .

They will carry eight defensemen: Nicolas Haag, Noah Hanifin, Ben Hutton, Kaedan Korczak, Brayden McNabb, Alex Pietrangelo, Shea Theodore and Zach Whitecloud. The two goaltenders are Adin Hill and Ilya Samsonov.

Lukas Cornier, Jakub Demek and Jordan Gustafson are all listed as injured as well.

The Golden Knights begin their quest to become Stanley Cup champions for the second time on Wednesday, October 9, when they host the Colorado Avalanche at T-Mobile Arena at 7:00 PM PST.
