Final: Tyler Horton closes out Game 3 victory

The Tigers’ closer took care of business in the 9th, striking out Austin Hedges with a 90.4 mph fastball to give the Tigers a 2-1 series lead at Comerica Park. The Guardians haven’t scored in 19 innings, meaning back-to-back shutouts as the Tigers’ magical run continues.

Mid 8th: Tigers three outs from series lead; still 3-0

Vest continued the Tigers’ streak of strong pitching, recording his first strikeout by catching Thomas with a four-seam fastball. It was the third out for the Guardians, putting the Tigers three outs away from a 2-1 series lead.

Mid 7th: Clutch problem from Matt Vierling keeps Guardians scoreless

Brieske left the game after two innings to a big ovation from the crowd and picked up his third strikeout shortly before the changeup with a four-seam fastball on a 3-2 count. He was replaced by Sean Guenther, who walked Rocchio and gave up a single to Kwan, putting the Guardians in scoring position.

It ended up being a quick outing for Guenther, with Will Vest becoming the Tigers’ fifth pitcher to take the mound. With two outs and Fry at the plate, Matt Vierling produced the defensive play of the day as he made an athletic left-handed catch over his head to end the inning and preserve a 3-0 lead, making the game possible for the Tigers saved.

Bottom 6th: Torkelson puts Tigers up 3-0

Brieske stayed aside in the sixth, striking out Andrés Giménez on a 96.2 mph fastball with two outs already on the board, leaving the Guardians without a run. That clutch factor continued into the bottom half of the inning.

Eli Morgan replaced Herrin on the mound and gave up a pair of hits after striking out Pérez. Keith singled on a line drive to right field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Torkelson, after striking out in his first two at-bats, connected on a four-seam fastball for an RBI double, making it 3-0.

The Guardians made their fifth pitching change, bringing in Cade Smith. With two outs, he struck out Rogers with a sweeper.

Bottom 5th: Replace Hurter; Beau Brieske maintains Tigers’ 2-0 lead

Hurter was replaced on the mound by Beau Brieske after giving up back-to-back singles to Brayan Rocchio and Kwan, putting the Guardians in position to tie for the lead.

Brieske did better, striking out Fry before José Ramírez flew to center field to end the inning and preserve Detroit’s lead. Hurter finished the day with one strikeout, five hits and a walk.

With runners on first and second base, two outs and a 3-2 hit, Greene flew out to left field and was unable to increase the Tigers’ narrow lead.

Bottom 4: Score remains 2-0 after good pitching from both sides

Hurter had his own ‘three up and three down’ as he recorded outs on Lane Thomas, Andrés Giménez and Jhonkensy Noel to keep the game at 2-0 in the bottom half of the inning.

Guardians pitcher Eric Sabrowski made his first appearance of the series, escaping a jam and recording the three outs after a fielding error by first baseman Josh Naylor allowed Pérez to reach second for a leadoff double. Sabrowski retired Colt Keith and Spencer Torkelson back-to-back, and Trey Sweeney flew to left field.

The Tigers had a runner in scoring position for three of the first four innings of this game.

Bottom 3rd: Matt Vierling extends lead with sac fly; Tigers 2-0 ahead

Hurter returned to pitch the third inning and gave up a single to Steven Kwan on a grounder by Trey Sweeney, who scooped the ball up with his bare hand after it initially deflected off Hurter’s glove. A misplaced throw to first base by Sweeney allowed Kwan to advance to second base.

The Guardians remained scoreless, however, after Hurter struck out David Fry for his first K of the day, and Naylor grounded out for Cleveland’s third out. Two were left on base after Hurter intentionally walked José Ramírez.

Jake Rodgers provided the Tigers’ second run of the day with a line drive double to left field. With one out, Matt Vierling then scored Rodgers with a sacrifice fly to left field to give the home team extra cushion.

Bottom 2nd: Brant Hurter escapes the jam

Tigers left-hander Brant Hurter replaced Montero to start the second inning.

Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor singled on a line drive to right field, and Lane Thomas singled on a ground ball to center field. With runners on first and third base, Hurter delivered an eight-pitch AB with Bo Naylor, who hit a fly ball to right fielder Wenceel Pérez for the final out.

The Tigers remained scoreless in the bottom half of the inning. Alex Cobb retired the side without allowing a batter to reach first base.

Bottom 1st: Riley Greene scores RBI single; Tigers lead 1-0

Parker Meadows recorded the first hit of the game on a sharp ground ball to right field for a leadoff single. In doing so, he became the first Tiger to record a hit in each of his first five postseason games since Al Kaline in 1968.

The Tigers then scored the first run of the day – with two outs, Riley Greene hit an RBI single up center to score Meadows.

Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians Game 3 pregame talk

TRENDING: Freep’s Tigers beat writer is noticeably absent from the coverage. This is why.

While Carpenter’s 400-foot explosion turned heads, he wouldn’t have stepped up to the plate against Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase if shortstop Trey Sweeney hadn’t reached base first. Sweeney, of course, came to the Tigers as a prospect included in the deal that sent right-hander Jack Flaherty to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But Freep’s Jeff Seidel says the shortstop is anything but a throw-in.

Comerica Park will almost certainly rock for its first playoff game since Oct. 5, 2014 – a 2-1 loss that ends a sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in the ALDS. The Tigers haven’t won a playoff game at Comerica since Oct. 16, 2013 – a Game 5 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS. But expect a raucous crowd to enjoy the kind of once-in-a-generation playoff run, according to Freep’s Shawn Windsor.

At least for the Tigers. As the Freep’s Dave Birkett notes this morning, the Tigers’ near-miraculous recovery from a 10-game deficit on August 10 parallels that of the 2022 Lions, who rose from a 1-7 start to narrowly miss out on the playoffs to miss and achieve victory. seeds of a team that won a franchise-record 14 games last season (including the postseason) and is a frontrunner to reach its first Super Bowl this season.
