Meet Jake Haener, the Saints’ QB if Derek Carr can’t play | Saints

“Not good,” Carr said when asked how he felt during the postgame presser.

Jake Haener, a sophomore quarterback from Fresno State, stepped in for Carr to finish the play. Haener completed two of seven pass attempts for 17 yards in the short effort.

Monday night marked the first regular-season action of Haener’s career in which he attempted more than one pass. Perhaps his most notable play was a mobile sidearm attempt to cross Alvin Kamara, but the toss missed its target.

In the Saints’ season-opening 47–10 victory over the Carolina Panthers, he threw a single pass and did not complete the throw. He saw no action in 2023 and was suspended without pay for the first six games of his rookie year for violating the league’s performance-enhancement policy. The suspension caused him to lose $250,000 of his rookie salary of $750,000. In a statement on social media, he said he did not know how the substance got into his body.

“I would never knowingly cheat the game I love, but I must take full responsibility for the failed test,” the statement said. “I apologize to the Saints organization, my friends and my family for any distraction this suspension may cause.

“I am disappointed to be away from the team for the next few weeks, but I will learn and grow from this experience. I look forward to returning to the team as soon as possible.”

His best preseason performance came on August 11 on the road against the Arizona Cardinals, where he completed 9 of 13 pass attempts for 107 yards.

The Saints traded up in the fourth round to select Haener in 2023. At Fresno State, he set the all-time school record at 68.1%. During a 2022 comeback win over San Diego State, Haener threw two touchdowns in 13 seconds.

After joining the Saints, he went viral in a photo shoot with poses you’d expect from a 1990s boy band.

In high school, he was a standout quarterback in Northern California at Monte Vista High School in Danville.

Spencer Rattler is New Orleans’ third-string quarterback. A rookie quarterback selected in the fifth round of the 2024 draft, Rattler was a former teenage sensation and the nation’s No. 1 pro-style quarterback coming out of his high school’s Class of 2019, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. During his time at Oklahoma and South Carolina, Rattler was in the conversation to win the Heisman Trophy and had three seasons with over 3,000 passing yards. In the preseason with the Saints, Rattler completed 20 of 38 pass attempts for 202 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.
