Play connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. Every day you get a new puzzle at midnight. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.

You will be shown a grid of 16 words. Your job is to divide them into four groups of four by discovering the connections between them. The groups can be things like clickable items, names for study participants, or words preceded by a body part.

There is only one solution to each puzzle, and you have to be careful when it comes to words that fit into more than one category. You can play the words in any order so you might see the connections between them.

Each group has a color code. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult. The purple group often uses puns.

Select four words that you think go together and press Send. If you make a guess and you’re wrong, you lose a life. When you’re close to the right group, you might see a message saying you’re just one word away from the right group, but you still need to figure out which one to swap.

The greens were the most striking group for me today. I was a little unsure at the time about what to do next. I suspected that APPLE might have gone with the Halloween group to browse for apples. I guessed at BAR, STAFF, (baseball) BAT and CANE, as in a group of long objects. Not even close.

However, that gave me the confidence to go for the more obvious collection of Halloween symbols. When I saw APPLE and CANE together, the purple group became clear. That left the blues for the win, but I didn’t understand that connection. I should have, since I used to play keyboard.

That’s all it takes for today Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check out my blog for tips and the solution for Wednesday’s game if you need it.

PS It’s easy to forget how much fun Hocus Pocus is until you watch it again, so let’s continue with that for our October movie recommendation today. It’s a really good gateway film to horror for younger viewers who like scary movies. I’ve been meaning to watch the sequel, so I should do that in the next few weeks.
