Dallas Cowboys at Pittsburgh Steelers: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

After a tough road win last week against the division rival New York Giants, the Dallas Cowboys pulled it out again and came away with the 20-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5 at Sunday night football. It was a battle from start to finish, but you have to admire the courage the Cowboys had in battling it out against a tough opponent.

Today we’re going to look at some of the things that went right and wrong for the Dallas Cowboys in this Week 5 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. There was a lot of bad and ugly on Sunday night, but some good things happened too. We will identify and discuss each below.

THE GOOD – Rico Dowdle and Jalen Tolbert

The good thing this week from the Dallas Cowboys Week 5 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers is a draw between Rico Dowdle and Jalen Tolbert. Dowdle rushed for 87 yards on the ground on 20 carries and added another 27 yards and a touchdown through the air. Tolbert led the Cowboys in receiving with seven catches for 87 yards through the air and caught the TD with just 20 seconds left on the clock. These two stepped up in a big way when they needed to, helping Dallas secure the “W” this week.

THE BAD – Marshawn Kneeland/Tyler Guyton injuries

When it rains, it pours. The Dallas Cowboys suffered another major blow at the DE position when Marshawn Kneeland left the game against the Steelers early in the first half and did not return with some form of knee injury. As if that wasn’t enough, Dallas also saw Tyler Guyton leave the game with some sort of lower leg injury and not return. The Cowboys were already dealing with several serious injuries to key players entering this Week 5 matchup, and losing these two for any length of time would make things even worse.

THE UGLY – Steelers third-down efficiency

The Cowboys defense was without a pair of its star players in Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, then lost Marshawn Kneeland early in the first quarter. Despite all that, they still managed to hold the Steelers to 3 of 12 on third-down conversions. That’s an ugly number for an offense with a dual-threat QB in Justin Fields. Many thanks go to Trevon Diggs and others for shutting down star receiver George Pickens, who had three catches for 26 yards in the game. The Cowboys defense posted a good performance of the year for the second year in a row.
