Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians, ALDS, Game 2

Upper 6th

Colt Keith comes in to pinch hit Ibanez, then Kwan runs to the warning track to take Greene out. Perez fares no better, striking out in three pitches while Smith throws a quick frame.

Bottom 5th

Thomas almost gets a hit on a ball that barely lands in foul territory, then strikes out to Skubal with an inside fastball. Naylor gets the first hit for Cleveland, a two-strike double that landed between the outfield shift. Noel is then hit on the right hand with a pitch, placing a pitch on his right hand as the Guardians now have runners on first and second base with one out. Gimenez swings on the first pitch and drives into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning as Skubal excitedly leaves the mound.

Upper 5th

Boyd stays in after getting out of that fourth-inning jam, and he gets his fifth strikeout of the day off Sweeney. Malloy hits a sharp liner to right field and Noel makes another big play there, cutting the ball before throwing Malloy out at second base. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt makes the call to pull Boyd after that play, bringing in reliever Cade Smith. After three at-bats, the Guardians finally get Vierling out as he faces a low fastball for strike three and the final out.

Bottom 4th

The Guardians cycle back to the top of their batting order as Kwan hits a grounder to first base, then Fry swings on the first pitch and also hits a grounder. Ramirez swings and misses on another low changeup, as Skubal strikes out seven today.

Upper 4th

Perez gets a perfect hit down the left field line for a leadoff double, then Torkelson hits a fly ball to right-center field as Perez tags to third base with only one out. Meadows gets a chance to get the first point of the game, but he hits a low-and-away slider. Rogers can’t bring Perez home as he swings and misses, while Boyd is egged on by the Progressive Field crowd.

Bottom 3rd

Andres Gimenez fights back from an 0-2 down to make it full, but swings and misses on a low slider for Skubal’s fourth strikeout. Austin Hedges strikes out after missing a low changeup, then Brayan Rocchio looks at a 90-mph fastball for the final out of the inning as Skubal is rolling today.

Top 3rd

Trey Sweeney flies to left field for the first out, then we return to the top of the order as Malloy hits a sharp liner for Kwan into left field for a single. Vierling fights for nine pitches and draws his second walk of the day. Ibanez hits a ball into foul territory, but Noel runs from right field to grab the ball from the stands for the second out and Malloy tags in to third. Greene swung on the first pitch and grounded out to end the Tigers’ first chance to score today.

Bottom 2nd

Skubal lets Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor fly out, then Jhonkensy Noel swings and misses for his third of the day on a low change. It’s starting to look like a pitchers’ duel here in Game 2.

Top 2nd

Boyd gets Wenceel Perez to fly to right field for the first of the second inning, then Spencer Torkelson makes a full count but strikes out for a change. Parker Meadows hits a slow chopper down the left field line and beats the throw to first base for the first hit of the day. Jake Rogers swings but places a fly ball to left field for the final out.

Bottom 1st

Here’s Tarik Skubal for the Tigers, facing leadoff hitter Steven Kwan and Kwan striking out. Skubal then gets David Fry to ground out to third base, and Ramirez swings and misses on a low changeup for the third out, as both pitchers put together an error-free first inning.

Top 1st

The first out comes quickly, as Malloy flies out after three pitches. Then Matt Vierling comes back from an 0-2 count and draws a walk, but Andy Ibanez looks at a low changeup for a strikeout. Riley Greene swings on the first pitch and flies out to left field for the third out.

First pitch

Time for Game 2 of the ALDS. Lefty Matthew Boyd makes the start for the Guardians, and AJ Hinch gives Justyn-Henry Malloy the top spot for today’s match. The first pitch is a swing and miss for Malloy.

Foreplay

The Detroit Tigers will try to avoid a 2-0 hole in the American League Division Series when they face the Cleveland Guardians on Monday afternoon.

Cleveland handed the Tigers their first loss of the postseason a few days ago in a 7-0 loss, fueled by a dominant performance on the mound with a total of 13 strikeouts from their pitching. The Tigers couldn’t keep the game close as they gave up five runs in the first inning and never found their rhythm trying to climb out of that hole.

The Tigers won’t go with an opener this time, as Tarik Skubal returns to start six days after his dominant Game 1 against the Astros in the Wild Card Series. Meanwhile, the Guardians are selecting former Tiger Matthew Boyd, who signed with Cleveland during the 2024 regular season.
