The Bills coach owns it and explains how he blew it late in the loss to the Texans

HOUSTON – The Buffalo Bills somehow managed to bounce back in Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans after losing 20-3 in the third quarter.

Then a late-game collapse led to a game-winning field goal for the Texans as time expired, negating the Bills defensive effort that forced two C.J. Stroud turnovers in the fourth quarter.

Bills coach Sean McDermott blamed himself.

With less than a minute left, the Texans were pushed out of field goal range on an intentional grounder penalty by Stroud. With 41 seconds left, the Bills got the ball on their 3-yard line. Houston had three timeouts and the Bills needed a first down to keep the Texans from getting the ball right back.

Buffalo averaged 5.4 yards per rush in the game and just 4.1 yards per pass. Quarterback Josh Allen had one of his worst games of the past five seasons. He finished with just 131 passing yards on 9 of 30 passing yards. Despite having trouble in the passing game, offensive coordinator Joe Brady pulled off three consecutive passing plays. All three were incomplete passes.

So the Bills punted back to the Texans with 16 seconds left. They ran one play for five yards, while Buffalo’s safeties played deep as if Houston was going to try for a touchdown. Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn made a 59-yard field goal to win the game for his team, putting the Bills up 3–2.

McDermott said he should have run the ball.
