Why didn’t Shane Steichen take timeouts during Jaguars’ winning drive?

JACKSONVILLE – The Colts had a plan to use the timeouts they left on the board as the Jaguars raced for a game-winning field goal.

Things didn’t go as they had hoped.

Indianapolis held two timeouts as Jacksonville drove into the final two minutes of a tie game, running down the clock on what ended up being a 49-yard game-winning field goal by Cameron Little. The ball sailed through the uprights with 21 seconds left, giving Joe Flacco and the Colts offense virtually no time to try to answer in what would be a 37-34 loss.

“We would do that as soon as they got into that range — as soon as they got to about the 40-, 45-yard line,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said. “That was probably about the range when we started using them.”

He was referring to the Colts’ 40- or 45-yard line, where the Jaguars would be just a few plays away from attempting a game-winning field goal.

The Jaguars ran three plays to get into that range: a 9-yard pass to Johnson, a 5-yard pass run by Tank Bigsby and an 11-yard pass to Luke Farrell. But those three plays ran the clock down from 2:40 to just 35 seconds remaining. The Colts didn’t call a timeout until there were 27 seconds left.

The Colts finally got the ball back with 17 seconds left to run two plays before a Travon Walker sack by Flacco ran out the clock in a 10th straight Colts loss to the Jaguars away from home.
