Tropical Storm Milton threatens to grow into a major hurricane aimed at Florida’s Gulf Coast, including Tampa, potentially causing billions of dollars in damage and further misery in a state and region still reeling less than two weeks ago is by Helene.

Milton’s top winds reached 60 miles per hour early Sunday, about 860 miles west-southwest of Tampa, with the storm expected to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane as it crosses the warm Gulf of Mexico, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. That puts the storm on course for winds of 125 mph that could rip roofs off buildings and snap trees when it makes landfall on Wednesday. Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 35 provinces.
