As expected, Macklin Celebrini did not travel to Vegas with the San Jose Sharks this weekend. This is the last game of the Sharks preseason before Thursday’s home season opener and there are still a few spots up for grabs.

In the front group, Collin Graf, Ethan Cardwell and Danil Gushchin are still at the top of the Barracuda. Interestingly, San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng reports that Klim Kostin’s name was also in the mix when Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky was asked which players are competing for the remaining spots. You’d imagine Kostin has the inside track, if only because he’s the only one of the four who doesn’t qualify for waivers.

In defence, Luca Cagnoni remains with the Sharks, as do Shakir Mukhamadullin and Jack Thompson. On that front, we suspect Cagnoni will find his way back to the Barracuda, as it is a big jump from the WHL to the NHL. While it’s possible, there’s no reason to rush Cagnoni before he’s ready. That leaves Thompson and Mukhamadullin.

Both are eligible for waivers and both appear to be ready. The real question is: Who gets hurt more by spending time in the press box as the team’s seventh defenseman? Or will the Sharks do something a little more daring and sign Marc-Edouard Vlasic as their seventh defenseman?

Kostin, Cardwell, Thompson and Cagnoni will all play tonight. Opening night schedules should be ready on Monday, so decisions will be made quickly.

Since there’s no Will Smith, no Celebrini, and no Mikael Granlund, your guess is as good as mine as to what the rules are. Mackenzie Blackwood was the first off the ice, so he’ll likely be the starter in net tonight.

Vegas Golden Knights lines for October 5, 2024

As for the Vegas Golden Knights, there aren’t really many details on who will be playing, but Julian Gaudio of The Hockey News reports that Zach Aston-Reese, Tanner Laczynski, Jonas Røndbjerg, Ben Hutton and Kaedan Korczak all took part in the optional morning ray , which probably means they’ll get a healthy scratch tonight.

Adin Hill is expected to start in net tonight.
