NFL Injury Tracker Week 5: Rashee Rice to IR, Nick Chubb returns to practice, Malik Nabers and Jonathan Taylor out

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice left Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers on a cart with a knee injury. Initial reports said the team believed Rice had torn his ACL. Although that has yet to be confirmed, he continues to undergo tests.

Head coach Andy Reid said Thursday that Rice was held out of practice and will undergo more testing next week. While we wait, the Chiefs have placed Rice on injured reserve and he will miss at least the next four games.

“I guess it’s just a matter of seeing where we are now,” Reid said. “For him, we really hope everything turns out well, but let’s just see where it goes. Leave it for the doctors to see. I’m definitely not a doctor.’

Rice suffered the injury during the chase after quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton. Rice tracked down Fulton on the interception return and grabbed the ball from behind. At the same time, Mahomes dove in front of Fulton for a tackle.

“I wasn’t really worried about myself,” Mahomes said. “I was worried about his injury and hopefully it wasn’t as bad as it looked because I was the one who hit him.”

The Giants have ruled out Malik Nabers for their Sunday afternoon game in Seattle after he suffered a concussion in last Thursday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Nabers tried to make a catch along the sideline on fourth down, but was unable to get the first down. He remained down and was attended to by Giants athletic trainers before being taken to the locker room for the remainder of the game. He was later ruled out due to concussion.

Nabers entered the concussion protocol the next day, and while head coach Brian Daboll said they would make a decision on playing time for the rookie wideout, he announced Friday that Nabers will not play, but that he is making progress.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will play against the Patriots on Sunday after being activated from the PUP list, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. Beckham is dealing with a knee injury and has yet to make his season debut with the Dolphins.

The three-time Pro Bowler, who has had a history of ACL injuries, underwent knee surgery this offseason, postponing his 2024 season. Beckham was a full participant in practice this week for the first time this season and will be a welcome addition to the Dolphins’ struggling offense on Sunday.

The Dolphins are 1-3 and according to head coach Mike McDaniel, Beckham wants to help turn that record around.

“On a team that is very motivated to win a football game, I think he would like to try to help with that,” McDaniel told Rapoport.

More than a year after a devastating knee injury, Browns running back Nick Chubb returned to practice on Wednesday.

Chubb, who underwent surgeries to repair his medial capsule, meniscus, MCL and ACL, said his knee feels good but no timetable for a return has been set yet.

“It didn’t feel real. It felt like a dream,” Chubb said. “I’ve been fighting this for a while. It was great to get all of that off my shoulders and finally get back out there.”

The 21-day window for Chubb to return to the Browns’ active roster has opened. He has been ruled out for week 5.

Running back Jonathan Taylor will miss Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a high ankle sprain and quarterback Anthony Richardson was downgraded to questionable to play.

Taylor’s injury is on the same ankle that has had issues in the past, with the running back suffering a similar injury in 2022. After missing a few games that season, Taylor re-injured the ankle in December and was placed on injured reserve and underwent injury recovery. surgery, ending his season.

According to multiple reports, this ankle injury is not as serious as injuries from previous years, but Taylor’s recovery time will likely be longer than normal given his injury history.

Richardson, who was originally listed as questionable on Friday, was limited in practice this week by an oblique injury. Joe Flacco took most of the first-team reps on Friday, a good indication that they are looking to start him under center for another week.
